Companies Race to Hire Chief AI Officers as Tech Reshapes Business Strategy
A new executive position emerged across major enterprises in 2023 as artificial intelligence became central to business strategy: the chief AI officer. Companies including Boeing, NASA, PwC, Pfizer, F5 and Mahindra Group have already appointed CAIOs to not only manage technology but also align AI innovation with ethical, operational and strategic needs.

Federal requirements propelled this expansion when the White House directed agencies to appoint CAIOs for AI oversight. The UAE government followed suit by establishing CAIO positions across Dubai’s authorities to advance its digital economy goals.
“AI will soon redefine roles across the board. We’re witnessing this shift in fields like software engineering, and it’s just the beginning,” said Daryush Laqab, CAIO at Ascendion. He describes his mission as transformative and – at the U.S.-based AI-first software engineering firm – his responsibilities include not only providing technical oversight but also building responsible AI frameworks that prioritize transparency and rigorous standards.
The CAIO role helps businesses gain a competitive edge through strategic AI adoption. These executives are tasked with aligning projects with company objectives, managing risk considerations and leading cross-department AI implementation. A Gartner study showed 54% of organizations appointed AI heads. According to a KPMG report, half of surveyed companies planned to hire or have added CAIOs to guide AI initiatives.
“We anticipate that AI will disrupt the role of every information worker within the next few years. We are already witnessing this transformation in software engineering,” Laqab said.
India-based Mahindra Group demonstrated this trend by forming a dedicated AI division. The automotive company appointed former Digital Operations Head Bhuwan Lodha to lead the new unit. “We have set up the AI division at a group level, which is tasked to make our businesses successful with AI,” Lodha said.
Responsible AI Framework Takes Priority
The CAIO’s mandate extends beyond technical oversight. These leaders define their company’s AI vision, bring solutions to market and establish ethical governance frameworks, Laqab said. Their systems address data privacy protection and eliminate bias in AI implementations while aligning with organizational objectives. At Ascendion, every data scientist and machine learning engineer develops solutions under stringent guidelines, which Laqab describes as “prioritizing rigorous planning and transparency” – an approach critical in regulated sectors such as healthcare and finance where trustworthy AI proves essential.
Collaboration With Technology and Infrastructure Teams
CAIOs work in strategic partnership with CIOs and CTOs to integrate AI capabilities into organizational systems. Laqab underscored the importance of unified planning where AI leaders and technology teams implement initiatives without duplicating or straining resources. This approach builds cross-functional momentum, enabling CAIOs to embed AI in broader processes while maximizing existing IT investments and supporting overall strategy.
“Just as the CDO emerged to manage data, the CAIO is essential for navigating the complex landscape of AI technologies. As businesses seek to leverage AI for competitive advantage, the CAIO becomes a strategic asset, guiding the company toward responsible and innovative AI applications,” Laqab said.
Best Practices for Ethical and Responsible AI
A robust ethical framework remains central to the CAIO’s mission. As organizations deploy AI to handle sensitive data and customer interactions, they must prioritize transparency and ethical standards. Laqab identified essential considerations for ethical AI deployment:
- Defining clear use cases aligned with guidelines and stakeholder needs;
- Implementing transparent data management practices;
- Creating strategic frameworks to evaluate build-versus-buy decisions
- Preventing system biases to ensure fair treatment;
- Maintaining continuous stakeholder communication throughout implementation.
Future Focus: Generative AI and Enhanced Productivity
Ascendion developed an extensive road map for gen AI advancement, predicting substantial changes in information work through 2025. The company built specialized teams of AI engineers focused on creating productivity tools that support its innovation goals.
