Blackpoint Cyber CEO Jon Murchison on MSP Cloud Identity Risks
Managed service provider management of multiple systems and logins increases risk when transitioning to consolidated identity services such as single sign-on, according to Blackpoint Cyber CEO Jon Murchison.

While SSO simplifies access and strengthens security, he said it creates a “many-to-one” relationship where a single compromise can grant attackers access to multiple systems. Relying solely on alerts from identity providers is inadequate, he said, prompting Blackpoint Cyber to invest in tools that can respond in real time to identity compromises in cloud services such as Microsoft 365, Duo and Google Workspace (see: Blackpoint Gets $190M From Bain Capital to Boost MSP Defense).
“This infrastructure is under heavy attack these days,” he said. “What you have to do is protect those identities. Because what happens? You have a one-to-many relationship. If you have a compromise of entry of your enterprise admin that allows access to your RMM, your IT documentation can cause a big issue. We saw this trend pushing hard on on-premises to the cloud during COVID-19.”
