Panel Discusses Views on Cryptocurrency, OT Security and Data Sovereignty
From the RSAC Conference 2025 in San Francisco, four ISMG editors discussed highlights from the second day, including supply chain security, AI-fueled crime, developments in cryptography and the increasing data sovereignty concerns globally.

During the annual cryptographers’ panel, Adi Shamir – one of the world’s leading cryptographers who represents the “S” in the RSA cryptosystem – said blockchain technology still has potential as a decentralized ledger, but its main beneficiary, cryptocurrency, has fueled a massive rise in cybercrime. Shamir told attendees “the world would be a better place if they’ve never been invented,” said Mathew Schwartz, executive editor for DataBreachToday and Europe.
Cybersecurity is increasingly making it onto the board agendas. This is especially the case for OT security because of the potential disruption to the business, according to Robert M. Lee, CEO and co-founder of Dragos, who spoke with Rahul Neel Mani, vice president of community and editorial at ISMG. “The boards are now talking more about OT security than the CISO,” Neel Mani said.
The impact of data sovereignty and geopolitics on cybersecurity purchasing decisions is a key topic at RSAC. “There’s been a push from organizations, not only in Europe, but in Asia as well in the Middle East, to want to keep their data local, whether that means an on-premises data center, whether that’s working with a hyperscaler for points of presence,” said Michael Novinson, managing editor, ISMG business.
The panelists – Schwartz; Anna Delaney, director, productions; Neel Mani; and Novinson – also discussed:
- The Department of Homeland Security’s vision for strengthening America’s cybersecurity posture;
- The expanding focus on securing both public and private AI models;
- The role of agentic AI in security awareness training.
