WEF’s Akshay Joshi on How Global Instability Is Affecting Cyber Resilience
Geopolitical tensions are fueling a cybersecurity arms race, reshaping corporate strategies and straining international cooperation. Nearly 60% of all organizations reported prevailing geopolitical instability has had an impact on their cybersecurity strategies, said Akshay Joshi, head of the Centre for Cybersecurity at the World Economic Forum.

Meanwhile, the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence is introducing a new set of cybersecurity blind spots, particularly with the rise of shadow AI. Many security leaders report that AI-driven projects often fly under the radar, only coming to their attention when they start causing anomalies within IT infrastructure. Information sharing and treating cybersecurity as a business imperative is a must, Joshi said.
“There is concern regarding the cybersecurity conversations that are happening at the top – are they the right conversations, which are strategic in nature, or is it more around basic practices that cybersecurity needs to be a line item on the agenda,” he said. “What it translates into is the need to integrate security with business decisions that tackle a lot of cybersecurity risks that you could inherit as a consequence.”
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Joshi also discussed:
- How AI-human collaboration can shape future cyber defenses;
- Improving collaboration on cybersecurity between governments and industries;
- How resource gaps leave smaller organizations and developing nations vulnerable to cyberthreats.
At the World Economic Forum, Joshi heads initiatives to reinforce the importance of cybersecurity as a strategic priority and drive global public-private action to address systemic cybersecurity challenges. Prior to joining WEF, he had more than a decade of experience in management roles in sectors including maritime transport and public relations.
