Large cloud providers lack credibility when offering security tools that support environments beyond their own platform, said Palo Alto Networks Founder and CTO Nir Zuk.
Customers inherently distrust a vendor such as Google trying to provide security for competing platforms including AWS and Azure. Zuk predicted that Wiz under Google will only appeal to organizations fully embedded in GCP, which is rare at the enterprise level. The cloud offers a controlled environment to automate and secure the entire software life cycle from code to cloud to the security operations center, Zuk said (see: How Google-Wiz Deal Counters Microsoft Defender’s Dominance).
“What we’ve seen with other cloud providers that have been trying to sell multi-cloud security solutions is that it’s not working,” Zuk said. “Customers do not buy multi-cloud security solutions from cloud providers. They don’t trust the cloud providers to support the other cloud as well as the one that the provider is running. And I don’t think this case will be different.”
In this audio interview with Information Security Media Group during Palo Alto Networks’ Ignite on Tour – New York, Zuk also discussed:
- Key drivers of convergence between security operations and the cloud;
- Why machine learning is better than LLMs for security purposes;
- Why Palo Alto Networks has avoided the identity and email spaces.
Prior to co-founding Palo Alto Networks in 2005, Zuk was CTO at NetScreen Technologies, which was acquired by Juniper Networks in 2004. He was also the co-founder and CTO of OneSecure, a pioneer in intrusion prevention and detection appliances, as well as a principal engineer at Check Point Software Technologies.
