The Healthcare Sector Coordinating Council is kicking off a healthcare sector mapping initiative aimed at helping the ecosystem avoid massive disruptions in the event of more highly significant cyber incidents, said Greg Garcia, executive director of cybersecurity at the Healthcare Sector Coordinating Council.
“How do we prevent – and if not prevent – be prepared for the next Change Healthcare-like attack that can has systemic impact?” he said referring to last year’s ransomware attack on the UnitedHealth Group IT services unit that caused massive disruptions to the healthcare ecosystem for months.
“How do we map all those healthcare workflows in a way that we can depict and illustrate all the interconnected points? It’s a complex undertaking. But if we can provide those maps to the stakeholders to do better supply risk management, then we’ll succeed,” he said in an interview with Information Security Media Group during the HIMSS 2025 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In this audio interview with Information Security Media Group (see audio link below photo), Garcia also discussed:
- The three phases of the sector mapping initiative;
- Healthcare sector cybersecurity uncertainties while the federal government transitions under the Trump administration;
- Collaboration within the healthcare sector and with the federal government involving cybersecurity efforts, including medical devices and cyberthreat sharing;
- Other industry cyber projects underway at the HSCC, including workforce development efforts.
Prior to joining HSCC, Garcia was the nation’s first Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary for cybersecurity and communications under President George W. Bush. He also served as executive director of the Financial Services Sector Coordinating Council and held executive positions with Bank of America, 3Com Corp., the Information Technology Association of America and Americans for Computer Privacy.
