Ballistic Ventures’ Kevin Mandia on How CISOs Can Lead Through Economic Turbulence
The world is in turmoil with military conflicts and an uncertain economy because of tariff wars. In times like these, cybercrimes are bound to increase. While security budgets will be spared, CISOs shouldn’t expect substantial increases and must learn to use AI to do more with less.

Apart from monitoring the threat landscape, security practitioners also must be aware of geopolitical events because they could eventually affect criminal activity, increase taxes and lead to more budget cuts.
“You’re going to see two things happening: There’s going to be an acceleration of AI adoption. Secondly, we may have to do more with less, but that’s the promise of AI. A CISO has to think about the things he can function without, and how can they do things differently with the emerging technology of AI,” said Kevin Mandia, general partner, Ballistic Ventures.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSAC Conference 2025, Mandia discussed:
- Why fraud and threats increase in times of uncertainty;
- The need for dialog between nations to deter crimes;
- How CISOs can shift from being technical experts to strategic business leaders.
Mandia has more than 30 years of experience combatting cyberthreats. He mentors entrepreneurs, leveraging his deep understanding of the threat landscape and his proven success as a founder and CEO. He previously founded Mandiant, and was its CEO from 2016 to 2024, including leading the company through its successful acquisition by Google in 2022.
