COO Francis deSouza Explains Google Cloud’s Push for Unified Multi-Cloud Security
Google’s $32 billion buy of Wiz was driven by increasing customer demand for robust, cloud-native application protection across multiple cloud environments, said Google Cloud COO Francis deSouza.

Customers are demanding consistent, unified security across all cloud platforms, and they want a single framework to define and manage their compliance and security postures regardless of where their workloads reside, deSouza said. Enterprises prioritize the quality and effectiveness of security tools regardless of if it comes from a cloud service provider or an independent security vendor, he said (see: How Google’s $32B Wiz Acquisition Will Reshape Cloud Defense).
“They want to make sure they have a unified security and compliance posture across all clouds,” he said. “What they want to be able to do is define their security posture, and then have it applied consistently across clouds. They do not want different security approaches for different clouds. They also want to be able to collect compliance and security data in a unified way across their cloud infrastructure.”
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, deSouza also discussed:
- Expansion of Mandiant’s capabilities and global reach under Google Cloud;
- How Chronicle, VirusTotal and Siemplify integrate with threat intel and Google’s cloud-native application protection platform;
- How Google Cloud is using AI in detection, prioritization and simulation.
deSouza joined Google Cloud in January and leads strategic operations across the organization. Prior to Google, he co-founded SynthLabs, an AI alignment company backed by Microsoft and First Spark. Before that, deSouza served as CEO of Illumina, where he led the company’s innovation in DNA sequencing, and as president at Symantec, where he oversaw the company’s security and data management portfolio.
