Ransomware, Quantum Computing, Geopolitics, GenAI and More on the Agenda

Cybersecurity conference klaxon: Infosecurity Europe returns to London this first week of June. Running from Tuesday through Thursday, this year’s event has keynotes covering everything from quantum computing, geopolitics and artificial intelligence, to supply chain attacks, insider threats and the cybercrime juggernaut that continues to be ransomware.

Scheduled hosts include WithSecure’s Mikko Hypponen, social engineering expert Jenny Radcliffe, Smashing Security co-host Graham Cluley, Rik Ferguson, head of security intelligence at Forescout, and Becky Pincard, who heads cyber operations at Barclays. The program is once again held in at the Excel Exhibition and Convention Center located at London Docklands.
Here are just 12 of the hot-looking sessions planned for next week’s event:
Tuesday, June 3
- Black Holes and Quantum Computers – Quantum Computers might change everything, eventually (10:10-10:50): Keynotes get off to a deep start, with lashings of hard science courtesy of renowned physicist Brian Cox, who promises to “explore the incredible science of how black holes and quantum mechanics hold the answer to the futures of computing and cybersecurity.”
- Quantum Computing Versus Cybersecurity: The Next Arms Race (11:00-11:35): Continuing on the quantum computing topic, leading security professionals will detail the post-quantum computer standards that have been formalized by the U.S. National Standards of Standards and Technology, detail the “harvest now decrypt later” threat now facing organizations, which organizations or most at risk and what they need to be doing about it now.
- The Cyber Cold War? Geopolitics driving cyberthreat (12:20-12:50): Britain’s National Cyber Security Center, part of intelligence agency GCHQ, serves as the nation’s incident response lead. Paul Chichester, NCSC’s director of operations, plans to deliver an update focusing on geopolitics and the latest threats to national security, how tactics and the groups are evolving and best practices for defending organizations.
- Calling BS on AI – Strategies to defeat Deepfake and other AI attacks (12:55-13:30): Who isn’t feeling fatigued by the nonstop talk about AI everything? Regardless, the threat posed by generative AI will only continue to amplify, experts warn. This panel promises to not only detail how it’s evolving, but also strategies CISOs should be putting in place to combat the two top criminal use cases for the technology: deepfakes and social engineering attacks.
- Long-Term Trends for Cybersecurity Leaders (16:00-16:30): Ciaran Martin, who served as the NCSC’s first president and is now a professor of practice at Oxford University, and cybersecurity expert James Lyne, formerly of Sophos, both now work with the SANS Institute. Their talk is about finding the right focus in an AI where obsession looms large, and yet, as they say, “we’re still faced with major breaches that originate from password guessing, out-of-date infrastructure and inadequate firewalls.”
- Ransomware 3.0: How Attackers Are Changing Their Thinking (16:40-17:20): Leading ransomware experts – hailing from Britain’s National Crime Agency and City of London Police, the Ransomware Task Force, as well as incident response firm Coveware, will detail the current threats they’re seeing and how they’re likely to evolve.
Wednesday, June 4
- Shifting Sands – Geopolitics, threat and the future (10:05-10:45): Rory Stewart, the former diplomat and politician who hosts The Rest is Politics podcast, promises “to offer a compelling, pragmatic analysis of how geopolitics is shifting and the evolving global power dynamics, with reference to changing alliances, evolving threats, the likely impact of global trade wars and how U.K. and EU defensive policies can be used to respond.
- Ransomware Now and In The Future (11:00-11:35): What’s in store for the next decade of ransomware? Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at WithSecure, will detail how criminals continue to organize and improve their operations, and how generative AI promises to refine their attacks.
- Security ROI: Where should you be spending your budget? (13:00-13:40): Top cybersecurity professionals from consultancy KPMG, market researcher Forrester and U.K. merchant banking group Close Brothers detail how they hone their budget to maximum their ability to purchase essentials, best practices for selling their vision to the board and demonstrating return on investment, as well as their upcoming spending priorities.
- Clarification on the upcoming tsunami of legislation (13:55-14:40): So many cybersecurity regulations, so many acronyms. Lately that includes not only the General Data Protection Regulation, but also the U.K.’s Cyber Security and Resilience Bill. Two experts from the law firm Clifford Chance Tech Group and consultancy NCC Group will detail what organizations need to do now to ensure ongoing compliance, not least in the age of AI.
Thursday, June 5
- Is it Safe? The Security Challenges of Generative AI (11:00-11:35): Michael Pound, a computer science professor at the University of Nottingham, will look at GenAI upsides, when and how it can all go wrong and detail the extent to which AI can be used in a secure manner.
- Secrets from the Frontline: Navigating Ransomware Extortion (11:50-12:30): No ransomware victim may want to engage with attackers, but how – and when – should they do so? Dan Saunders, director of incident response at Kivu Consulting, part of Quorum Cyber, will share best practices, including how negotiations can be used to gain valuable intelligence, even if victims have no intention of paying.
- Crisis Averted: Effective Communication Strategies During a Cybersecurity Breach (13:35-14:15): The clear message from any organization that’s suffered a cybersecurity incident is to not compound problems by failing to plan and execute an effective crisis management strategy that can manage expectations without impeding response or investigations. This expert panel “will show how to handle cyber crises with poise and precision, ensuring your organization emerges stronger and increasingly resilient.”
All This and More
Others speakers promise to tackle open source security concerns, how to balance security and privacy, best practices for helping women to advance their cybersecurity careers, strategies for maximizing cybersecurity results at budget-strapped small and midsize organizations and much more.
Hope to see you next week at the keynotes or on the show floor.
